So why are these reports so important? Well, having an understanding of who is visiting your site and how often can give you an excellent idea of how to better market your site. Marketing is all about hitting your target audience dead on. If you aren’t reaching your target audience then it may be time to switch demographics or try a different approach. It’s for this reason that traffic report generators have become common place in many SEO tools. One such tool is TLT.

The TLT program is a tool that specializes in increasing traffic to a specific site. It uses a number of different techniques to spoof traffic to your website effectively increasing your websites rank in the search engines over time. So what are some of the features TLT has to offer?

Double Meta Refresh (DMR) – There are times in your online adventures when you need to *AHEM* blank the referring traffic location. An example of this is if you wanted to send people from Craigslist to a CPA offer that did not allow traffic from Craigslist. If your affiliate manager found out the traffic came from Craigslist, you would be screwed on your commissions. If you Double Meta Refresh, you have cleared the referrer from Craigslist.com to NOTHING. They will have no idea where the traffic came from. We also built in a random rotator feature that allows you to send the traffic randomly to one of the pages you put in. This helps you figure out which offer converts better for the traffic you are sending. You then remove the other offers that were not doing as well and run the offer with the highest conversion rate. Voila!!!

Fake Referrer - This takes DMR to another level. Instead of the affiliate manager seeing the traffic coming from NOWHERE, you can force the code to insert the referrer as whatever you want. An example of this is if you are sending traffic from website 1 to an affiliate offer. Now on website 1, you may have some things on it that are against the terms of service for the offer, or any other reason. So you use our tool and force the code to say that the traffic came from website 2 instead. Website 2 will obviously be complying with all TOS or whatever else. The affiliate manager will think it came from website 2 and you will chuckle a little when you cash your affiliate check.

As a rule, Google doesn’t put out press releases when it fails to acquire companies, making a new rumor difficult to confirm.  But the search giant may have tried to purchase an advertising firm called Admeld, and, despite having a solid reputation and more cash than many countries, been unsuccessful.

Of course, Google probably didn’t bring every penny of its $ 35.0 billion (as of December 31st) to the bargaining table.  Jay Yarow and Nicholas Carlson explained today, "We’ve heard Google was willing to spend $ 150-$ 200 million on Admeld, but that price was too low for Admeld."

So here’s a little more information about the company that supposedly turned down Google.  Admeld was founded in 2007, and offers a real-time bidding platform designed to help publishers sell ads.  It’s based in New York, and has been successful enough to establish offices in Berlin, London, San Francisco, and Toronto.

Also, Admeld raised $ 15 million in August, and the company’s vice president of operations hails from Google.

One other fun fact: Admeld seems to be the third company to reject Google’s advances in the last little while, following Groupon and Path.

Anyway, Yarow and Carlson wrote indicated that a "source says Google will probably look at Admeld rival Pubmatic next."

How do you do it?

A few ideas:

* Keep the pipeline full. Just due to the fact you are fully staffed now doesn’t mean it will usually be that way. Obviously, on the agency side issues can change speedily. One new account and you might want to add 2-three men and women–quickly. If you have a pipeline full of potential hires, this method won’t be nearly as painful–or lengthy. I love what local Minneapolis branding agency, Quick Horse, is doing along these lines. Using Facebook to maintain in contact with future hires, so when the opportunity comes along, they have a number of candidates to pull from.

* Make your own game. Don’t like the techniques above? Fine. Make your own game then. Kinda what we did with HAPPO last year. Positive, our major motivation was to support PR pros across the country in a number of methods (finding jobs being the principal MO). But, I also gave thought to what HAPPO might mean to my organization. As an organizer, I would be able to get an insider glimpse into who was looking for work. Crucial as I need to identify and discover a particular kind of sub-contractor that can work within my organization–they’re not simple to locate (got lucky with Scott Hale–accurate diamond in the rough). Making your own game is one of the large lessons I learned from Keith Ferrazzi a while back–and you can make it work for your agency/firm, too.

I’m not positive which came first, the idea that social media is killing blogs or social media is killing e-mail. Both arguments are brought up each and every so typically, and both are equally ludicrous if you ask me. Earlier this week, we examined the former, and interestingly sufficient, the latter was also brought up by recent data from comScore and the Pew Internet Project.&nbsp

For companies trying to make sense of social media and online marketing, it’s important to take a step back from all the “TwitFaceBlogTubeIn” mania for a second and look at the nature of how these things are going to work for the overall business.

There are many questions that need answers:  ”Should we develop a strategy first before engaging?”,  ”Should we experiment and develop a strategy as we go?”, “Will it ever be OK to ask customers if they want to buy directly within social channels or will we always have to tiptoe around the subject?”

Here are a few considerations to help answer those questions and establish the framework for a sustainable and successful social media marketing program.

Social Media Strategy: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pond of cure”.  Having some idea of what measurable goals and business outcomes you’re after is essential for planning resources and forecasting outcomes. This is true with any kind of marketing and is certainly the case with social media.

I polled a number of industry smarties on social media strategy vs. tactics and while there was some distance between the approach Guy Kawasaki preferred and that of people like Chris Brogan, the consensus was that developing an approach is essential for planning, implementation, accountability and measurement of success.

The formation of a social media strategy is a ripe opportunity for creativity and certainly shouldn’t get in the way of getting started. Gaining consensus about social strategy within a corporation could easily create a bottleneck.  A strategy that calls for experimentation with iterative improvement in the context of overall goals, approach, tactics, audience and an effort to measure success is more likely to be implemented and gain support.

Social Media Marketing Tactics: The best mix of tactics needs to tie into the plan for reaching business goals.  Whether it’s “Better engage with our customers” to “Filling the top of the sales funnel”, an understanding of audience preferences and behaviors will lead to the right tactical mix.

A lot of companies take the path of least resistance and go for what I like to call, “The Social 5-Pack” of: Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, YouTube and LinkedIn without thinking through tactics. For example, one common question often I hear is, “Is a LinkedIn group a better use of time and resources or a Facebook Fan Page?”

What the marketer might want to ask is, “Where do social networking vs. blogging vs. microcontent vs. media sharing fit in the context of our social media goals?”  Then do the research and implement a listening program to discover which social networks, media sharing sites or blogging communities the target audience is present and participating in. That homework will answer the question about Facebook vs. LinkedIn and any other social communities where customers spend time.

Social Media Process: “Companies who start with implementation are at risk”, is a great quote from Jeremiah Owyang in his recent post, “A Pragmatic Approach to Social Business“. There he lists a checklist of 8 steps that form a process for approaching social media.  Jumping into tactics can send a company in a very unproductive direction. Working through a strategy, tactics and developing processes leads to efficiencies, scalability and social engagement that is true to the business goals.

Process with social media marketing is important for a variety of reasons ranging from quality assurance to accountability. Facebook - “The top reasons people press the “Like” button on Facebook is to have a sales relationship with a brand - either to receive promotions & coupons (40%), get updates on upcoming sales (30%) and show their support for companies (39%).” – ExactTarget 2010.

Twitter - “For over 40% of the time people are on Twitter, we spend it learning about products and services, listening to what others have to say and giving opinions.  That explains why over 20% of the time we’re on Twitter, we’re ready and willing to buy directly off Twitter.” – Edison Research 2010.

Social Networks – “For every hour we spend on online, we spend the most amount of time on social networks, almost 15 minutes of every hour. Roughly half of the time (approx 6+ mins), we are seeking out products and services and looking to have a sales relationship with brands.” Nielsen 2010.

As more brands include commercial offers in the social experience they provide for customers, those customers will become increasingly comfortable with the notion of social commerce. At the same time, more social features are being added to ecommerce websites. In the way that blogs and Twitter accounts are expected features of brand websites, so will social commerce functionality.

Building a flexible strategy that considers business goals and the people to engage will help marketers identify the best mix of tactics for their social media marketing program. Developing processes from a corporate and an individual standpoint will help sustain, not stifle, social engagement activities in the long run.  Start by building community and relationships.  Listen, respond and create value. Monitor and analyze for opportunities to implement social commerce features, but don’t rush it.

Google’s recent algorithm update aimed at content farms appears to have affected Demand Media significantly, but not in the way you might have thought. According to a study from Sistrix – the Visibility Index – Demand’s eHow has actually gained rankings, while many of the company’s competitors dropped. 

"Well, there is no sign that Google tried to downrank ehow.com. Ehow.com even gained SISTRIX value (from 270 to 310) and Keywords (from 317,320 to 324,021) during the algorithm-change," says Sistrix’s Johannes Beus.

"Quite a statement from Google regarding the quality of Demand Medias’ content, isn’t it?" adds Beus.

Here’s the list of top losers, according to the firm:

One particularly noteworthy aspect of this is that Associated Content is among the losers. This is run by Yahoo, one of Google’s main competitors in search and advertising (which is of course combined with Micosoft’s now).

In fact, Associated Content was the top loser in terms of most keyword rankings lost, according to Sistrix data. Associated Content is followed by Suite101, EzineArticles, HubPages, Buzzle, MerchantCircle, Wisegeek, ArticleBase, FindArticles, AnswerBag, and Examiner in that department. This list is pretty interesting. It even includes PRNewswire and Technorati, as well as AnswerBag, Trails and LiveStrong – 3 Demand Media properties.

On Quora, SEO consultant Jeffrey Russo, said, "I pulled in data for a set of 35 queries that were dominated by article directories in the weeks leading up to and immediately following the announcement of the update. While what I have isn’t a large enough sample size to draw any hard conclusions from, it generally mirrors what Sistrix found… Substantial drops for some well-known article directories like ezinearticles and Hubpages, and a general shuffling around of many smaller sites."

"One thing that surprised me was how well a few particular sites appear to have fared in this update," added Russo. "eHow, for instance, was a site I expected to see impacted negatively – but that wasn’t the case. On the set of queries I tracked, eHow saw a substantial increase in many places. It’s possible that this is simply because less authoritative directories that ranked above it were devalued; it’s also worth noting that many of my queries included "how to" phrases, which are eHow’s bread and butter. That being said, it’s pretty clear that eHow wasn’t hit by this particular update. Wikihow also saw a substantial improvement on my set of keyphrases."

Among the top gainers since the algorithm change, according to SEOClarity (via Sullivan): Amazon, followed by eHow, NexTag, Wikipedia, Walmart, Target, Etsy, Yahoo Answers, and Sears. 

Consumer Reports blasted the iPhone 4 when it 1st came out for AT&ampT, citing reception difficulties. Now, Consumer Reports is producing a comparable case for Verizon’s incarnation of the iPhone four.

We’ll merely have to reserve any judgments on Google’s search quality as affected by this update, until we’ve had far more time to naturally encounter more top quality or a lack thereof.

It seems to me the nuts and blots of marketing are the easiest.

I have a diagram of what I’m doing and keep to a schedule.  With a few tools to help out, getting a first page ranking really isn’t that tough (In particular if you have an exact match domain for your keyword or in many cases purchase an aged domain, at least in my opinion).

My difficulty is finding an offer, maybe some others have had the same experience? For faster money and a new promotion CPA seems to be the fastest way to go for profits?

CPA networks are great for getting access to a large number of offers to test.  Once you are a member, ask your Affiliate Manager what’s hot …they are great resources.  That is the best way to learn CPA Marketing right out of the gate.  They know where the traffic is converting for the types of traffic you may be pushing.  Learn from them by asking questions and evaluating what they say is working with what traffic.

So when looking through some of the networks (cj, azoogle, linkshare, neverblue, clickbooth, etc) what am I actually looking for to make money. The first reaction would seem to be go for the highest payout? But looking through the pages you may need to have traffic fill out an application or make a major purchase. The easy ones, zip submits or name and email submits, in many cases look good, but at around a $1, give or take, would take forever to build up a flow of traffic to actually make a dent in a pay check.

I love free trial offers.  They convert, and it only takes 2-3 a day and you are making $36,000 a year on that alone.  They are also more emotion driven, which is a good thing when it comes to sales.  The key is to try a bunch of stuff.  You have to look at it like fishing.  You have to cast out a few times and in a few places before you find the fish.  You don’t just cast it out 2-3 times then get pissed, pack up and go home.  You will never, EVER be successful marketing ANYTHING if you do that.

So I guess the basic question is…

… what do you look for in a good CPA offerfor your CPA Marketing campaign?

Payout ?
Etc…

THIS IS A GREAT QUESTION.  You see, I look for stuff I think will make money.  Like stuff that is hot right now.  This works better with video promotion for me.  I also look for stuff that is evergreen, like dieting and loans, or dating.  These niches all have a upswing and downswing every year, always at the same time.  The thing is, alot of these have up and down swings but always have traffic.  Zero in on one and start working on it.

In terms of picking an offer, for video I go after newer CPA products or offers, since they have less keyword competition and are easy to rank videos for the keywords.

I know someone is going to say something about how to choose the landing page.  Honestly, I do not look at the LP anymore except to see if it is what I am promoting and how their sales flow goes. 

TAKE YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE QUALITY OR LOOKS OF THE PAGE OUT OF THE EQUATION.

Yeah, I said it.  Your opinion sucks when it comes to rating LP’s.  WHY?  Because you are not selling yourself and your ego can get in the way of making a clear decision.  You see, this game is all about numbers and data, not EMOTION or OPINION.  The best converting offers I have ever run are usually the pages I think suck the most. The key is to pick a niche, select 5-10 offers for similar products.  Send traffic to it however you wish.  Look at the data and see what offer they “liked” the most.  Run that offer all of the time (90% of the time – 10% testing to other offers so you can always be running the best offer AND so you have a backup in case your best offer goes down).

I say anything over $10.00 per conversion or in that ballpark is a good offer that deserves testing. Why not?  Again, I like free trials, stuff like netflix, etc.  Go where the money is people.  Go to facebook, go to other sites and see what people are promoting.  Follow the ad and see their LP.  Watch others – they are not going to keep promoting if they are losing lots of money.

What offers do well with video traffic?

You never really know what will do good on conversions with video until you try.  The thing is, you should be able to have your outsourcer blasting video’s out there for you while you are gathering offers and links for them.  You will want to try many different offers and landing pages per niche and rotate the offers with a .php rotator for the traffic coming in.  This will help you test the keyword and the offer for that niche.  The TLT has a rotator built into it for you – take advantage of that.
